Wheeler defeated Newton 74-69 in OT during the Longhorn Steakhouse Classic at Milton High School on January 29, 2022.  Wheeler, led by 5 Star PG Isaiah Collier’s 25pts, proved why Isaiah’s name should be mentioned when discussing top PG’s and NBA draft stock in the next few years. Newton was without 2023 Indiana Hoosier commit Jakai Newton, who’s nursing an injury and is listed as day to day.
UCONN commit 6’6 G Stephon Castle dropped a smooth 30 piece for Newton and hit 3 free throws to take the game into overtime.  Wheeler proved a bit more polished, making big time finishes at the rim  and executing solid sets down the stretch. Wheeler’s ability to feed their big, along with Isaiah’s tenacious attack to the rim off the triple threat, proved to be the difference maker in the win. Hats off to Wheeler, the players, and their coaching staff for a job well done.

When Newton is at full strength, they are tough to beat.  Sitting at 17-4 and 4-0 in Region play, no need to get excited out here in Covington, GA.  At the end of the day, the 4 losses all have meaning and will be a blessing in disguise. Newton will get back in the lab, watch film, and become smarter and wiser about their play.  It’s all in the process of becoming battle-tested
