Takeaways from the ATL Summer Slam

ATL Summer Slam
AAU Girls Basketball
Hosted by FBC and Insider Exposure
July 24-26, 2020 Suwannee, Georgia
Suwanee Sports Academy

Two premier AAU tournaments this past week, hosted by FBC and Insider Exposure, shed some light on the ‘state’ of girls basketball in the State of Georgia and beyond. The Atlanta Summer Slam and War Games (Session 2) didn’t disappoint. There was a slew of talent from top to bottom as we came away feeling like a kid in a candy store, given the amount of content we were able to film and photograph for our archives.  While taking a look at up and coming 2025 hoopers go at it and then turn around and see 2021’s show up and out,  we came away with one conclusion fam’…

These young ladies out here playin’ just as hard as the boys!  They tuff’ too!!

FBC’s nucleus of talent is super-impressive.

Finest Basketball Club (FBC) probably has the best group of talent  – from top to bottom – in the country.  Definitely Top 5.  Their FBC United 17u team was unbeatable,  showing tremendous poise in both the WarGames 28.5 Atlanta and Atlanta Summer Slam.  When players like 2021 Virginia Tech commit (Verbal) Brianna Turnage (above) began to share minutes, you know your team is loaded with talent!

A few standouts from the 2020 ATL Summer Slam.

Raven Johnson
5’8 PG 2021
AAU: FBC United 17u

Westlake High

ESPN 5 Star 98 Grade
South Carolina Commit

With her style of play and the way she carries herself on the court, South Carolina pledge Raven Johnson appears to be prepping for the WNBA.  Hands down stud when she suits up for the Gamecocks of South Carolina and HC Dawn Staley in 2021-22. Raven was her dominant self on defense, ran the ball club like a veteran PG, and shows ZERO signs of slowing down.  This young lady end destination will be the WNBA fam’.

2021 Raven Johnson licks her chops on defense during the 2020 Atlanta Summer Slam. The South Carolina commit is special.

5’7 PG 2023
AAU:  FBC United 17u
W. J. Keenan High

ESPN 5 Star 96 Grade

2023 MILAYSIA FULWILEY from South Carolina had a break-out performance.  To even see minutes as a Frosh/Soph on one of the top Girls AAU teams in the country, is impressive. Milaysia went a step further and showed that she belonged in the conversation.  If there was ever a one and done in the girl’s game or someone choosing to skip college and enter the WNBA, then it would be Milaysia Fulwiley. She dazzled the crowd with breathtaking spin moves and no-look passes.  She also got hers, pulling bow and arrows from long range and consistently making tough, athletic shots from all three levels.  This young gun is TOP 5 in the country, regardless of classification!

If there was ever a ‘one and done’ for the girl’s side then 2023 MILAYSIA FULWILEY would be it. The image was taken during the 2020 Atl Summer Slam 07|24|20. Popscout

De’Mauri Flournoy
5’6 Point Guard 2021
AAU:  FBC United 17u

Carrollton High
Verbal: Vanderbilt

ESPN 4 Star 95 Grade
Ranked #17 Position / #69 Overall

You know how we feel about consistency. 2021 De’Mauri Flournoy was consistent with her game throughout both showcases.  That’s saying a lot considering the toll AAU games take, with regards to playing multiple games in one day and the wear and tear on your body. You can easily have a bad game, but she didn’t.  That also speaks volumes when you’re playing at the highest level day in and day out. True floor general with crisp, pinpoint passing, cerebral, and consistently knocks down her open shot(s).  A long-range threat who can also shake and bake with the best of them.  ESPN has her at 4-Stars, 95 Grade at the time of this post.  After a strong upcoming senior campaign, look for this young lady’s stock to rise.

2021 Vanderbilt commit De’Mauri Flournoy is shifty with the rock. Long Range Sniper from deep. Popscout

Ta’Niya Latson
5’8 Combo Guard 2022
AAU:  FBC United 17u
Westlake High

ESPN 4 Star / 93 Grade
Ranked #5 Position / #33 Overall

Coming off a GHSA State Title Run where Westlake went 30-2 and Ta’Niya poured in 23 points to Capture the ‘Chip, this young lady hasn’t missed a beat.  She showed up and out during the WarGames ATL & Atlanta Summer Slam, playing at a high level with her super athleticism and a great feel for the game.  Being consistent with her jumper and ball handling are more and more becoming staples to her game.  Her ability to sit on defense, which is something you just don’t see every day, is one of the strongest skills that she brings to the table.  Her ability to finish off turnovers is huge – once she picks your pocket like a thief in the night!  Appears as though Ta’Niya will continue to round into form under the FBC Umbrella and Westlake High,  becoming a straight soldier at the end of the day.

2022 5’8 CG Ty’Niya Latson is a stocking stuffer. Scores in bunches and is lock-down on defense. The ESPN 5-Star has offers from Georgia, Florida, and Alabama. Popscout

Other Program Standouts:

Sydney Bowles
6’1 W 2022
AAU: Georgia Pearls
Woodward Academy High

ESPN 96 Grade – 5Star
Ranked #2 Position Rank / #13 Overall

Competitive as can be, with a game to back it up, 2022 W Sydney Bowles continues to show why she belongs in the conversation.  This young lady was special, displaying a ‘Big Guard U’ mentality.

Advanced ability to handle and manufacture shots with her size, pushes the rock for uptempo play, knocks down shots from mid-range and beyond the arc, gets to the bucket while pressuring opposing defenses to help, super smart and intelligent with her game, and just an overall problem for opposing players.  This young lady has super-stardom status written all over her game.

Janiah Barker
6’3 F 2022
AAU: Essence

Tampa Tech Senior High

ESPN 5 Star 96 Grade
Rank:  #1 Position / #4 Overall

The marquee match-up for the day featured 6’4 South Carolina Commit Sania Feagin against 6’3 2022 F Janiah Barker.  Janiah held her own while showing flashes of greatness.  This agile scorer has a silky-smooth shooting touch and plays with such a great motor.  She was active as can be and because of her willingness to play her emotion on her sleeves, she (along with her teammates) was able to keep the game close with her competitive nature and willingness to win.  An all-around skilled player who rebounds and pushes, stops and pops, drives off the dribble, and does the dirty work needed for her team to excel. Fluid game to say the least. Very vocal on both ends of the court and really plays focused and locked in. High ceiling.

2022 Janiah Barker is the #1 Ranked Pos. #4 Overall Player for 2022 per ESPN. The Florida native went to work during the 2020 ATL Summer Slam. Popscout

Although COVID-19 is still a major part of our lives and how we rethink athletics, safeguards were in place.  FBC and Insider Exposure did a tremendous job of adhering to health guidelines and enforcing social distancing and wearing a mask.  Blessed that we were able to get a glimpse of Girls AAU Hoops in the State of GA.  Upside huge out here fam’.
