Girls Hoops: Matt Denning Stand Outs

A few stud-muffins who stood out during the 2019 Matt Denning Hoops Classic.  Games played @ Mater Dei on January 5, 2019.

5’6 Sr PG Katie Fitzgerald was our favorite player at the 2019 Matt Denning Hoops Classic. Her basketball IQ and the way she understands the game is second to none. Popscout

Katie Fitzgerald
5’6 Sr Guard
Mater Dei High

Katie was our favorite layer of the tournament with her emery, high IQ, and passion for the game.  She plays a reserved role for the Monarchs, seeing minutes off the bench for a deep team that has depth at every position.  Katie is unique in that she understands the game and appears to be an AP student when it comes to her knowledge.  She handles well, pushes and leads the breaks, knocks down the wet ball and isn’t afraid to get down and dirty by pressuring on the defensive end of the court.  Haven’t heard a lot about this young lady in terms of recruiting buzz but we love what she brings to the table.  Continue to do what you do young lady.  You are special.

Madison Campbell showed out during the Classic.  Madison and Clovis West Head Coach Craig Campbell ( I wonder if that’s his daughter?) form a formidable tandem where she becomes a true extension of the coach.  Because of her size, can play the 1 or 2 effectively.  Superior court awareness, showing the ability to lead her team when it calls for her to do so.  Shows supreme confidence with the rock in terms of handling defensive pressure but could use a bit more athletic prowess.  Good jump shot shooter with smooth shooting stroke.  Can get in the paint and dish or hit the floater off the dribble.  Will need to work on defensive pressure and ability to handle more athletic guards on the defensive end. Should be an immediate impact for the Lady Trojans of SC next season.

ESPN 5 Star 96 Rating

This young lady sat and ate at the table for most of the game against Windward during their 3pm match up.  Centennial uses a system that, if ran effectively, is extremely hard for opposing teams to come away with the W.  Eboni shows superior skill sets, with an all around game that allows her to be effective on both ends of the court.  Loves to do work down low on the box but can also stretch the defense with her mid range game and ability to stop and pop.  She accepts defensive challenges as well, as you could see her willingness to defend against players who crossed her path throughout the course of the game.  It was a joy to watch teams who year in and year out, show a willingness to buy into their coaches philosophy and grow within its system.  Kudos.

Cailyn Crocker

Mater Dei
Cal commit

Active, bouncy guard who should be an impact player once she enrolls at the U. of Cal Berkeley.  We love her energy and activeness on the court.  Will sit and slide on the defensive end and can run the offense like a soldier under Mater Dei’s system.   She benefits from her athleticism and willingness to be an offensive threat – putting pressure on opposing defenses with her jumper and or ability to get into the paint.  Shows solid vision when reading and reacting with the rock in transition and in trapping situations.  Cal has picked up a soldier who, if she continues to show passion and work ethic, might be playing years after her college days are over.

Video Clips of these ladies in action in our next article.
