Down by 9 at halftime during the Palisades Beach Invitational Tourney, it didn’t look good for the Palisades girls basketball team. Canyon was red hot, making buckets from three point land as well as getting great post play from their bigs. But, by the end of the third quarter, the Dolphins had taken the lead, 51-49, using a swarming full court press and knocking down a barrage of shots from all areas of the court. Midway through the 4th, Pali’ had command of the game and eventually went on to win by a score of 64-56. A game of two halves indeed as Palisades Coach Torino Johnson never seemed to sweat… and his players followed suit. A true sign of a championship caliber team.
It’s going to be a difficult task for teams to handle Palisades this year because of their superior guard play. They have three very good perimeter players in Seniors Chelsey Gipson, Chaniya Pickett, and Super Sophomore Kayla Williams – all of whom are fundamentally sound, show great poise on the court, and excel at playing a full court, smothering defense. Chelsey Gipson is something special – garnering a 95, 4 Star rating from ESPN. She’s signed with LMU and should make an immediate impact as a Freshman next year. When you come up against Pali and your back court play isn’t up to par, it’s a wrap. The team gets it in from baseline to baseline for – a full 32 minutes of play. Although they lack size in the middle (this may hurt them against bigger squads), they make up for it with heart as big as a 7 footer.
Take a look at some highlights from the Palisades vs Canyon game. We spotlight Super Sophomore Kayla Williams but make no mistake about it…#1 Senior PG Chelsey Gipson is a true stud-muffin. Palisades takes on Fairmont Prep Friday, November 25, 2016 at 7pm to see who advances to Saturday’s Championship game against the winner of Harvard Westlake vs Valencia.
