Talk about a great preview for upcoming basketball to jump-start the 2016-17 campaign. The Alemany Showcase held this weekend (October 15-16, 2016) at the new Sports Academy Complex in Newbury Park, showed that high school hoops in the State of CA is alive and well. Teams from Frosh/Soph to JV to Varsity, all came out to display their talents on day one of a great tourney ran by Alemany Coach Meeks, staff, and the warm welcome from the Sports Academy faculty. The barometer is set high indeed this year, as teams look to compete and bring home rings, staking their claim as ‘the boss’ in the State of CA for their perspective divisions.
Wait one minute! How does a school get on the map with so many teams already cementing themselves as top notch clubs on the CA high school bball circuit? You may want to give Heritage Coach Paul Tait a call. He’s assembled a set of soldiers, it seems out of no where, who look to be in top form – giving Fairfax and Alemany all they could handle on Day 1 of the Showcase.
Looking for a Unit that understands the game of basketball, then look no further than Heritage Christian. The cohesion is there as team chemistry is off the charts, going from 0 to 100 real quick, pushing the rock down your throat – looking to slay the dragon on every possession. And we do mean every possession. They keep their foot on the throttle… going 80 in a 30 mile zone.
And if that’s not the case, HC runs sets like a veteran ball club – showing the ability to out maneuver their opponent and hit open 3ptrs and/or convert back door opportunities. The team is a joy to watch, unless your an opposing fan. Great work on day 1 of the showcase. Look for HC to be on point, surprising a lot of teams who may take them lightly this year.
O my goodness. Fans of the game of basketball, you may want to make it out to see Alemany’s new addition – 6’11 F/C Fred Odhiambo. There’s probably not another up and coming dominating big man in So. California who plays with his back to the basket than Fred. He’s a native of Kenya and brings that post presence that every coach would dream of having. He’s a bit slender (weight room bro’) and rough around the edges but from his Day 1 performance at the Alemany Showcase, the kid looks to be a major D1 recruit and will garner much exposure as the season progresses.
Fred runs the floor like a deer, blocks shots and controls the paint, and – with his length – shows the ability to post up players, turn and face, and go to work. Something we just don’t see a lot of in the State of CA. Anticipating him staying in the lab to work on his ball handling attributes and jumper/midrange game – being that players nowadays have to show the ability to stretch the defense and hit perimeter shots. Sky IS the limit for this kid who has landed in the lap of Alemany’s basketball staff. Going to be nice to see his develop under Coach Meeks.
Take a look at the Game of Alemany vs Heritage Christian played at the Sports Academy Complex October 15, 2016. Alemany was shorthanded, playing without G Ernie Sears who was visiting Purdue on Track and Field business per Coach Meeks. But once Alemany assembles all their pieces…its a wrap we feel for opposing teams. Look for them to run the table with very few L’s this year.
Become Great at what you do.
