For the reigning champion Chino Hills basketball team, a slew of doubts surround the program after its historic championship run in 2015-16. Who will replace the Magic Johnson like Lonzo Ball, who has officially made his way to Westwood. To make matters worse, the Big Ballers VXT AAU club was a no-show in Vegas this summer, not allowing fans to gauge their team chemistry on a big stage. Gelo – who showed signs of greatness briefly this summer – still has heath concerns and many doubt whether or not he’ll be able to last a full season. Things that make you go hmmm. We had a chance to sit and chat with Lavar Ball, dad of the Ball brothers, who gave us his perspective on the upcoming and past seasons.

Many critics say it’s still tough to count Chino Hills out, considering they have most of their nucleus in place from last season – and with all those battle-tested games logged under their belts. They still have one of the most dominant young big men anchoring the middle (Big O), and that ever elusive Super SOPH PG, Melo Ball. With that being said, look for Chino Hills to push the envelope as they look to repeat without their star point guard as well as a new head coach’s philosophy. For Chino Hills, all the pieces are in place – if players are healthy – for another undefeated run at the Open Division and State titles.

The question will remain the same throughout the season: Can Gelo stay healthy enough allowing Chino Hills to fire on all cylinders throughout the season? Or will his health be a major concern, as they go up against tough games from opposing teams, seeking revenge from last season – licking their chops now that Zo isn’t in the backcourt. R Kelly didn’t see anything wrong with a little bump and grind but in Gelo’s case, too much physicality from opposing teams might cause him to feel the brunt of the injury bug. The best thing for this kid was to sit this summer, rest, and prepare for his high school season. We’re hoping those nagging injuries have healed and he’s at 100% for the start of the season.
