PopScout AAU Game of the Week: Cal Supreme 16u EYBL vs Griffin 15u

Look familiar?  Yep, it’s NBA Hall of Fame guard John Stockton, who coaches the 15u Griffin squad. Although they took a tough defeat in the semifinal game against a 16u EYBL Elite Cal Supreme squad, he has no reason to hang his head over his teams’ performance.  Image by PopScout.

Las Vegas is just around the corner.  We got BigFootHoops, FAB48, Adidas Gauntlet, and several other tournaments coming up in one week…good Lord!  What a way for clubs to ‘turn up’ for the Vegas tourneys by making a pit-stop to sunny southern California.  There were several tournaments going on this past weekend as well – which watered down things a bit –  but gave us some good games at different sites. Not associated with high school hoops, per say, was  Gerry Freitas, who ran his annual  JC tourney out of Cerritos College.  It gave JC teams the chance to ‘feel out’ their roster before the summer ends and get an idea of a players ability and weaknesses.  Teams can now go back to the laboratory to improve on deficiencies in ones game.

Always good to see teams from other states come to LA to show and prove.  Image taken July 16, 2016 at the FCP 2016 Cream of the Crop Tourney.

Dinos Trigonis and Full Court Press ran their Cream of the Crop tourney out of the MAP in Garden Grove, CA.  It featured some very good teams from across the country. Got a chance to see Belmont Shore take on LA Rockfish. Beginning to  get a feel of how CA clubs are doing, chemistry wise, which seems to be tough since you don’t have a lot of practice time and chances to bond as a team. We also had  DoublePump, who have been a staple in the AAU basketball arena for quite some time, showcasing their annual Best of Summer Tourney at the American Sports Centers in Anaheim,CA.

PopScout was on the look out for up and coming teams and talent.  It’s nice to see the rising stars in action, early on, and then see them on the big stage during their senior year. NBA Hall of Fame Guard John Stockton, who coached the 15u Griffin(WA) squad,  played Cal Supreme’s 16u EYBL team in a semifinal contest.  They threw everything but the kitchen sink at Cal Supreme, who was able to weather the storm and come away with a 2 point victory (52-50). You can see the Stockton influence oozing from Team Griffin as their guards and players in general made big time plays. Kudos Coach Stockton – who BTW was an assistant this past season for the Women’s Montana State Basketball Team.

We love the talent that Cal Supreme brings to the table and look forward to seeing all their clubs ‘get their ball on’ in Las Vegas during BigFootHoops. Take a look at the game against 16u EYBL Cal Supreme (Red jerseys) vs 15u Griffin squad (white jerseys), coached by NBA Legend, all time assists/steals leader, John Stockton.  You can really see his influence of the club and the “savvy-ness” of their guard play.  Must be nice to get pointers and tricks of the trade from a legend.

Become great at what you do.
