Not quite sure if we understand the season that Redondo Union and coach Reggie Morris Jr. is having. The team holds an impressive 21-4 record and is currently ranked #4 in the State. Maxpreps has them ranked 11th nationally. What makes this team so good ?

The team is quite good behind 6’2 senior guard Leland Green and a solid supporting cast. The ESPN 3 star recruit can do it all. Leland puts the team on his shoulders when the going gets tough; making a national name for himself after Redondo upset Bishop Gorman at the 2015 Maxpreps Holiday Classic. Bishop Gorman had beaten the Seahawks earlier in the season at the Tarkanian Classic in Las Vegas.

One of the up and coming teams on the So Cal high school circuit this year is Roosevelt out of Eastvalle, CA. They display some very good chemistry as a team, in which PopScout witnessed first hand at the Redondo Union Nike Tourney when they went up against Compton, and late in the season on the road against Village Christian and their 7’1 SOPH lefty Center Majur Majek – who by the way runs the floor like a Deer and shows signs of becoming a real threat in the middle for Village Christian – once he adds some weight and gets adjusted to the speed of the game -very high ceiling for Majek nonetheless. In tonight’s match up, look for Roosevelt and their guards to put in work, primarily because of their chemistry/cohesion on the court. They don’t break under pressure it seems.

Roosevelt also has a very, very, good mid-size big man in Jr. small forward Matt Mitchell – who shows “Draymond Green” type of skills-sets. Handles the ball well, hits the boards and rebounds. Can also hit the mid range jumper and is a good passer. He helps his team when the guards are being pressured by becoming a “release valve”, showing the ability to accept challenges and handle the rock to beat pressure without making mental mistakes. PopScout likes his game a lot. Mr. Mitchell should be getting some serious looks on the AAU circuit this summer.

But at the end of the day, it should be Redondo Union moving on to the 2nd round of the Open Division playoffs. Reggie Morris Jr. has great tutelage, being able to pick the brain of his dad – Reggie Morris Senior – who won a state title in 1988 at Manual Arts after rebounding from the 1988 City Championship lost (earlier post) to Crenshaw and upsetting them in overtime in the So Cal Regional State Playoff finals. Redondo Union faced Chino Hills this year and lost by 16 at the 2015 Maxpreps Holiday Classic Championship game . I’m sure it will be a tough matchup – and exciting one – if the two teams face off again.
Good luck to both squads and coaching staffs.
